iPhone as Mobile IT Management Platform

Computerworld gets it. The new iPhone is so good at web tasks it could be used as a mobile platform or dashboard to admin an entire network. With the advent of Ajax and the object oriented libraries with which one can programmatically accomplish administration ( say that three times fast ), the iPhone is primed, pumped and ready to be the next generation of IT tool!

I have already done some work making a nice little dashboard app to manage SQL servers at home and it is working pretty well. It would be interesting to see someone take the initiative and do a nice Active Directory admin app or a full on dashboard type thing.

iPhone is going places and the rest of mobile computing is pretty much struggling to even catch up let alone get ahead at this point. I am really excited to be part of this revolution.

Apple Apologizes for MobileMe Mess

Apple has released an apology for the rough start MobileMe suffered AND, in a lesson other companies should take to heart, gave all MobileMe users 30 days of free service as a gift for their mistake. The service was only messed up for about 4-5 days max so 30 days is way above and beyond the call and another reason why I love my Apple.

Good job Apple and thank you :)

Scripting SQL Server Databases

The Database Publishing Wizard is THE tool to use when one needs to script both data and schema for deployment around the office or world. Get it here!

WTF TighOf course it would not be Microsoft if every thing worked smoothly and this is no exception :( You will find the scripts this tool generates will NOT usually run in SQL Management studio. This is because of the way the team designed the managers memory use. Basically, it does not have a lot of memory to run scripts in–who would use a script anyway huh– and therefore will fail on almost all but the simplest of scripts.

The official upshot is it is a “Command Line” tool not meant to run the scripts in the management system. Uh huh, right … < sideways glance > sure.

For more about this actually pretty cool tool go to Scott’s Blog.

San Francisco IT Owns Itself

Self Ownage

In a show of true ignorance, San Franciso’s new computer network has been taken hostage by ONE disgruntled employee. To date the man refuses to give password and there is no access to the entire IT infrastructure for any of the administrative staff. Fears are that this, uh person, will go about deleting millions of secure information like emails and accounting records.

I won’t say I told ya so…but I did. Never let just one person have full admin rights on any network other than your home one. It is suicide. Hopefully, this will inspire some policy changes around the world.

Torchwood Again

Did I mention how much I love Torchwood! If you have never seen it, once again I implore you to check it out. If you like Sci-Fi, if you like tight writing with decent plots, and if you like “edgy” drama, Torchwood is for you. :)

The New Car Search Oh My!

Well, time to be buying’ a new vehicle. Not sure what to get this time, but I really am wanting a sports car again. I have raced cars in the past and enjoy the blast of a convertible and a beautiful engine sound. It should come as no surprise that of the many cars I have owned a couple have been Ferraris. My first was a 328GTSi and it was nice.

Mine was black with a tan interior and did not have the Tubi exhaust the one in the video did. Well, then I sold it! Funny thing is, I made money selling it and I don’t know many cars a person can do that with. This made my family stop thinking I was nuts. My dad was like, “you did what! You made money!” LOL.

I enjoyed the 328 greatly and then after it was gone I missed the fun of hopping in and really enjoying a drive. So…I bought another Ferrari about a year later. This one was truly my favorite car of all time, the Ferrari F355 F1 Spider. Whoa, what a beautiful example of engineering and seriously the best sounding car I have ever heard. Even now, I still think the 355 sounds better then even the new ones.

So, what to get now. I am thinking a new F430 Spider, but I must admit, though they are beautiful and quite nice, I still love the 355. In fact I probably will do the 355 again. Sometime, I need to do a page about Ferrari. Lots of facts and trivia about the marque that is interesting. There are a lot of stories for that car company.

Ok, back to work!

iPhone 3G Sales Hit 1 Million

Apple’s iPhone 3G sold over 1 million over the weekend. “iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend”, said Steve Jobs.

To put this into perspective, the original iPhone took 70 days or so to sell 1 million. The Apple application store reports over 10 million downloads this weekend too.

Hey, I had to get my Super Monkey Ball ya know!

iPhone 3G Launch Stutters

I Detect Fail

Oops, looks like Apple finally had a big snafu. iPhone 2.0 buyers all over the country were unable to activate their phones AND MobileMe was down for 3 days or so. OUCH!

Dubbed the “iPocalypse”, new iPhone users and upgraders were hit with delays and roadblocks causing major delays and not a little frustration to those in the long iLines. In better news, things seem OK now and hardly even minor issues are raising their ugly heads.

MobileMe was hit as well causing the service to be choppy at best for the last three days.

OK, a couple really good lessons can come from this for all tech people.

1. Please stage releases. Apple waited till very late in the game to make iTunes updates and iPhone software updates available. This caused a MASSIVE surge in downloads and as soon as the West Coast came on line in the US, well, sayonara iPhone activation.

2. If you are going to have critical infrastructure up and running for the launch, please try and make sure it is up and running. With MobileMe down kinda hard to get all that really cool stuff to work.

3. Know that there will be problems and have a contingency set up for the salespeople at the store. While it appeared some stores did have this others were apparently not ready for issues and as such there are some pretty bad PR stories running around.

All in all, this was not that big a deal. Issues happen and to have most AT&T stores sold out of iPhone 3G already is a good thing. This also gets press for “OH MY GOD TOO MUCH PEOPLES!” which is also not a bad thing.

It is kind of funny, the tech magazines and mainstream press seem to just jump up and down over this incident. Microsoft has this sort of crap happen on a regular basis and no one says much of anything–least of all make front page of NYT. Oh well, I guess there is a higher standard for Apple.

So for all you pundits and haters out there that just can’t seem to complain enough, the Govenator will deal with you :)
