Remember When

I thought I would share some of my favorite Doctor Who videos. This first one is probably my favorite. It is based on “Human Nature” a story that is heart breaking and uplifting at the same time. If you are familiar with this episode and can watch this video without a tear you are a better man or woman than I.

The Doctor becomes human and assumes his alias, John Smith. While human he falls in love with a beautiful woman named Joan Redfern. I will not give away the ending, but suffice to say sacrifice is made and love is lost and it is so, so beautifully written it makes my tough friends sniffle.

Remember when we said when we turned gray
When the children grow up and move away
We won’t be sad, we’ll be glad
For all the life we’ve had
And we’ll remember when

Doctor Who - John and Joan

Another wonderful video about this episode. Sweet song and great clips make for a bittersweet experience. Good stuff here.

I’m Not Rose / I’m Not That Girl

Martha always has my heart even though the rest of the world loves Rose. I guess I am a sucker for unrequited love and Martha’s story is one of the better examples I have seen. Using “I’m Not That Girl” from Wicked and some great editing this video is super. It hits the nail on the head for story and substance.

Don’t wish, don’t start
Wishing only wounds the heart
I wasn’t born for the rose and the pearl
There’s a girl I know
He loves her so
I’m not that girl

Because I Knew You

Another Wicked song, “Because I Knew You”, and another absolutely perfect fan video about Rose and The Doctor. Love, sacrifice, beauty and parting all wrapped up in a great, wonderful video. One of the best fan vids I have ever seen actually. Seriously, take some time and watch this one for sure. It is touching.

It well may be that we will never meet again
In this lifetime
So let me say before we part
So much of me is made of what I learned from you

Because I knew you…
Because I knew you…

I have been changed…for good.

Here Come the Drums

And so you don’t all think I am too emo ;) , one of my favorite scenes of the new series. The Master releases his paradox and brings invaders to Earth through a rip in time and space. All to the music “Voodoo Child” by Rogue Traders. How cool is that! The shot in this clip of the HMS Valiant ascending towards the rip is really, really cool and looks great on the tele.

OK, enough of that stuff, but, really, if you have not checked out Doctor Who since the 2005 relaunch, DO IT NOW. Don’t wait. Just go get it from Netflix or Amazon or whereever you want just do it! It is sweet! I like a lot of new TV.

Galactica, great but somewhat brooding and dark and a bit misdirected now.

Lost, great and lots of neat stuff to think about.

Stargate SG1 and Atlantis good in a variety of ways. Kinda like popcorn.

Doctor Who though is good for a whole other reason to me.

The Doctor is the ultimate “good guy”.
He is the embodiment of what is good and decent and self sacrificing.
He always helps the downtrodden.
He never stays for reward or thanks.
He never wants anyone to know what he has done for them.
He truly does good because he is good.
Not for glory, or money, or words, or statues, but for good.

To quote another fictional character, Albus Dumbledore,

Remember, if the time should come when you have to make a choice
between what is right and what is easy

What is right is rarely easy. It is easy to be for puppy dogs and flowers and peace and happiness. It is not easy to take a stand and make a difference. To be a light in the darkness. This is hard. It is also what is right and we must not let ourselves think the easy way is the right way. Lest we find ourselves in the peace of the gun or the happiness of dictated want.

I wish there were a real Doctor. :( The world could use a bit of his thinking and we could all stand to try and be a little more like this fictional character and a little less like typical people.

A fitting quote now from an Onmyoji Prayer used as the opening to Steel Angel Kurumi. Strange such a beautiful and kindly prayer be the opening for an anime DVD. I suppose not so odd to me, but to most people I am sure it’s a bit different. I have a plaque of this at my home. I rests by the entry way to my house so that all that enter may see it. :)

Supreme gods, bless us so that calamities do not befall us.

May there be peace and happiness, and long life,
and may our descendants prosper and become notable,
not through fortune or fame, but through love and deed
.

May our rice fields flourish and our silkworm cultures thrive,
may our works be blessed in your eyes.
May evil spirits be banished, and ghostly auras be destroyed.

Divine talismans hold something unfathomable,
they settle eternally in the courtyard. Their tally miraculous.
Numerous in the past, blessings impossible to put into words.

May the gods protect us all our days.
May Heaven, Earth, and Water guard all living things.
May all constellations sustain and protect me.

May all the seasons of the year,
all hours of our day be free of disaster, innocent of harm.
May the stars of good come, and the stars of evil disperse

The Doctor and myself, fictional and real, we believe in those boldfaced words. All the money in the world is nothing compared to love. All the fame one can achieve is nothing compared to the things one does with their life. Shame it takes a fictional character to act as the role model for this. There are too few stories of those who act upon this belief. There are those people in the real world though. There are and we need to remember they are out there lest we spend too much time thinking of those who do wrong or evil. :)
